Buckeye to Take on Dodgers on ESPN

Cory Luebke's much-anticipated MLB Debut didn't go as planned receiving a loss in his first start, but the former Buckeye ace showed enough to warrant one more start.

On Friday the 2007 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year toed the rubber for the San Diego Padres, getting thrown into the fire of a Major League pennant race, and there was no doubt Luebke had a bit of adrenaline.

"I was disappointed because I think I should have done better," said Luebke. "But I had a little adrenaline going. I was kind of rushing things and wasn't hitting my spots."

Having thrown only 5 2/3 innings as a professional, Fort Myers starter Alex Wimmers had to take a seat after five hitless frames Tuesday.

The 2010 first-round pick struck out six and walked one en route to the Class A Advanced Miracle's 4-1 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals.

The reeling San Diego Padres will hand the ball to a starting pitcher with no big league experience to try to stop the bleeding on Friday.

Cory Luebke will make his much-anticipated Major League debut as the Padres attempt to snap a season-high seven-game losing streak against the Rockies when the two National League West foes begin a three-game weekend series at PETCO Park.

Jack Shuck estimates he has logged over 200,000 miles on the two cars he's driven to watch his son play baseball. First there was the Pontiac Sunfire he totaled on a trip to Tennessee to see a game, and now he has a Pontiac G6 that has seen the odometer tack some miles.

It has long been speculated but the time has officially come. The 2007 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, former Buckeye Cory Luebke is on his way to join the San Diego Padres. Luebke will be the second Buckeye big leaguer joining New York Yankee Nick Swisher.

Buckeye Baseball Alumni Gathering Planned

One of the things I put at the top of my "wants" for the new Buckeye baseball coach once Bob Todd made aware his plans to retire, was a coach that reconnects with OSU alumni. For whatever the reason may be, the presence of Ohio State baseball alumni has not quite been what it should be.

It was also one of the first things I spoke to new coach Greg Beals about and he too mentioned that reaching out to alumni would be a priority of his. Beals has kept his word and has created an "alumni weekend" if you will, in an attempt to welcome alumni back to the program, strengthen the bond of the current program and those who help shaped it.

We kick off the weekend with big news as Alex Wimmers has signed a contract with the Minnesota Twins, officially starting his professional journey while ending his Buckeye days. Speaking of professional beginnings, Michael Stephens makes his pro debut last night for River City in the Frontier League.

While Coach Greg Beals will not have the services of Wimmers or Stephens, he will have Jared Strayer and Brad Hallberg who were on display last night in their respect Coastal Plain and Northwoods League action.

Burkhart Makes Northwest League Debut

Last night for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes former Buckeye catcher and 2009 Big Ten Player of the Year Dan Burkhart made his professional debut.

Burkhart a 10th round selection of the San Fransico Giants went 1-for-4 in an 11-2 loss.

Burkhart was promoted to the Short Season A-Level Northwest League after kicking off his professional career with a blistering run in the Arizona League for the Giants' Rookie Ball team. In five games in Arizona Burkhart batted .333; 6-for-18, with a double, a triple, a home run, while driving in three runs. Burkhart posted a whopping 1.121 OPS in Arizona.

Hurley Suspended 50 Games, Reacts to Ban

Former Ohio State outfielder (2006-10) Zach Hurley has been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension which is effective immediately, ends the professional debut season of the former Buckeye captain, a 29th round draft pick of the Oakland Athletics who was playing for the Vancouver Canadians.

Hurley gave myself, Chris Webb, a call this evening to respond to the suspension and to present the facts of what caused the failed drug test.

As mentioned a few weeks back, former Buckeye pitcher and the 2007 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Cory Luebke was a prospect of heavy interest for those discussing trade talk with the San Diego Padres. As Saturday's MLB trade deadline passed, Luebke was still property of the Padres.

It's the last day of July and while the MLB trade deadline highlights most baseball circles, there is a lot going on related to Buckeye baseball.

In our latest alumni news we have yet another Buckeye minor league promotion, a return from the DL, an unfortunate return to the DL, and a continuation of a very impressive season for one pitcher.
