The only good that came with today's embarrassing loss to Army is that it allowed myself the chance to work on alliteration as you can see in the title. Outside of that, the Buckeyes took a giant step backwards in falling 14-9 to an Army team that came in with just one win in 11 contests.
This is a bad loss.
This is a bad loss that stings more as I see St. John's is only 5-8 taking away any thought that Ohio State has a quality win to their record, not sure how I was oblivious to the Johnnies struggles but back to today.
The saying strong up the middle is apparently falling on deaf ears for the Buckeye players as a combined five errors were made between the catcher, shortstop, and center fielder. In total the Buckeyes committed six errors which led to six unearned runs. After 11 games Ohio State now has 19 errors which has led to 19 unearned runs.

Still Here
No worries, I'm still here. Just took last week off, call it my personal vacation. Then this weekend was filled to the max with the High School All-Star events, the Under Armour All-American game on Saturday, and the Aflac game on Sunday. Then of course we had yesterday's MLB draft signing deadline. A whirlwind of three days.
With the deadline coming and going, it does mean incoming Buckeyes Josh Dezse and Greg Greve will indeed be in Scarlet & Gray, and not pinstripes or Black and Orange as respectively they did not sign with the Yankees and Giants. This means I can start pumping out incoming freshmen and transfers profiles which I know has been much anticipated.
Also coming will be a recap of all of the summer league action and final thoughts. Congrats to the Buckeye trio of Andrew Armstrong, Brian DeLucia, and Drew Rucinski who were on the champion Luray Wranglers of the Valley League.
More Buckeyes in the pros and the latest news and notes as they come. Which should include Buckeye commits over the next few weeks from the class of 2011. Until those trickle out, be very excited that the Buckeyes snagged Wisler, he is very good and is a strong anchor to the class.
As always, for the latest news and occasional random offbeat thought, my Twitter account of ChrsWebb is the best way to always be informed... which potentially more info than you might desire.

Buckeye Baseball Summer League Update 8/1
Though we ring in a new month, we start to wind down the summer leagues across America. Over the next few weeks leagues will wrap up as mid-August forces student-athletes to prepare for their academics and head back to campus. Just not our Buckeyes as our quarter system does not have us start until late September.
Anyhow, here is the latest on our Buckeyes around the diamond.

Buckeye Baseball News & Notes 7/17

Courtesy the New York Times
From a potential new Buckeye, an emotional day in the Bronx, summer league action, to a pair of former Buckeye hurlers, the last day has been a busy one in the Buckeye baseball landscape. News and notes will become a regular here, and while it might not be a daily staple, it'll be often.
Here is the latest news and notes.

Summer League Buckeyes 7/16 Update
Update #2 is a bit later than I had hoped, but it's better late than never.
The past three weeks have seen little change in the seasons of our Buckeyes. Dean Wolosianky, Jared Strayer, and Drew Rucinski continue to have stellar seasons from the mound, while Matt Streng continues to lead the Buckeye batters with a productive and consistent summer thus far.
Not all is good however as we see a pair of Buckeyes in slumps, a few more who continue to whiff at a higher than desired rate, and a new Buckeye whose first impressions aren't exactly good.

Summer League Buckeyes
As far as I can tell, 12 Buckeyes will be playing in summer leagues this summer. Almost as disappointing as the low number, is the fact none are playing in the Cape. The Cape is not the end all be all, but it does provide the players with a chance to go head-to-head against the best, and for a program that is quite far from being the best in anything, there is no reason a Drew Rucinski, or Brian DeLucia at the very least are not in the Cape. Especially considering Iowa has four players in the CCBL.
If anyone knows of any other players, feel free to add them or shoot me an email so I can keep track of them.

Weekend Wrap: Buckeyes Take Two from Hoosiers
I'll take back what I said last weekend. While winning two of three isn't bad, and I'm not entirely upset, this was a weekend where a sweep was there for the taking.
In what is a bit unsettling for the veteran team the Bucks field, play behind the pitchers is still a problem, and Saturday it gave the Hoosiers a few extra outs, at-bats, and runs preventing the three game sweep.
Still with the first Big Ten series at Bill Davis in the books, the Buckeyes are tied atop the Big Ten heading into next weekend's showdown with Michigan State, and there is a lot to feel good and look forward to as the season progresses.
In the wrap you'll find out which players had a great weekend, which ones not so much, how the games where won, how Saturday was lost, and other random tidbits thrown together in a buffet of Buckeye Baseball. Ohio State is now 19-9 overall, 4-2 in Big Ten play.

Injury updates going into Autumn practices
The 2009 calendar year was one that saw half a dozen Buckeyes go under the knife or miss time for a variety of reasons due to injury.
As we're now less than a week away from Captain's Practice and Fall Ball in 8 days, here is where we stand.
Andrew Armstrong (Labrum) as mentioned Armstrong went under the knife to take care of his torn Labrum on July 23rd. The expected recovery time was 4-6 months. Nothing so far has appeared to set Armstrong back from a full recovery in 2010.
Brian DeLucia (Broken finger) DeLucia who broke a finger on his right hand in the season's second weekend taking infield during pregame would not return to the field for the Buckeyes in 2009, receiving a medical redshirt. DeLucia fully recovered in time for summer baseball, participated in the Valley League. The Watterson product hit .274 with three doubles, triples, and homers in process of being an All-Star for Rockbridge. A healthy DeLucia will be competing for a starting spot at the hot corner in a suddenly crowded infield. DeLucia has shown before his bat is hard to keep out of the line-up.
Brad Hallberg (Labrum) As DeLucia enters fall camp looking to lockdown the vacant third base position, so to does the Wisconsin native Hallberg. Early in the season Hallberg appeared in four games, collecing four hits in 10 at-bats before his season came to an early conclusion as well being the first of three Buckeyes to have labrum sugery on April 10th. Hallberg with 5 months to relax, rehab, and recoup heads into the Autumn ready to go. If Hallberg can come back and hit the way he did in the brief playing time, Hallberg might play a big role for the defending conference champs.
Michael Stephens (Bone chips, elbow cleaning) Stephens went under the knife in late June to clean out an elbow that was bothering him a bit. Stephens rehabbing back home in Southern California over the summer, returned to Columbus recently and is back to throwing while making a full recovery.
Eric Best (Labrum) Best like Armstrong went under the knife to take care of a labrum that began to fire up and cause issues. Best did not have the severity of tear that Armstrong did, but none the less it was determined he was best-suited to get it out of the way, and be able to pitch in 2010 at 100%. Best was pitching with the Licking County Settlers before having his summer end prematurely, and was pitching quite well. In limiting his walks, and locating his off-speed pitches, Best was 3-0, showing stuff that can prove more than effect and invaluable in the Buckeyes hopes of reaching Omaha.
Ross Oltorik (Elbow bursitis) As mentioned in his Q&A Oltorik's 2009 campaign came to an end in early May as he battled a case of bursitis. Oltorik did not participate in summer baseball deciding to rest his arm and work with a pitching coach. In what might have been the biggest news related to the reaching all set goals in 2010, Oltorik decided to hang up the football cleats. With the pigskin away for now, Oltorik will be entering his first autumn practices. For a team with two pitchers currently out, and a staff in need much depth having Oltorik around this fall is a huge plus.

DeLucia’s Two HRs Power Buckeyes
Led by two home runs and four runs batted in from junior third baseman Brian DeLucia, Ohio State defeated Cincinnati, 6-5, Sunday at Red McEwen Field to complete play in the BIG EAST-Big Ten Challenge with a 3-0 record. UC drops to 0-3 with losses to Purdue, Michigan and the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes had to battle the Bearcats, whom they were playing for the first time since 2003, in a back-and-forth game that featured seven ties and lead changes. Sophomore Drew Rucinski picked up the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings of one-hit, no-run ball. Jake Hale got the save with an additional 1.1 innings of effective relief work. The big senior retired five of six batters he faced, including three by strikeout, and gave up just one hit and one walk. He recorded his 12th career save, tying him for fifth on Ohio State’s career saves list.
Cincinnati touched Ohio State starter Dean Wolosianski for runs in each of the first three innings, but after Ohio State fell behind 2-0 in the second, one swing of DeLucia’s bat in the bottom of the second gave Ohio State a 3-2 lead. After Justin Miller and Cory Rupert had reached base with singles, DeLucia crushed a Brian Garman pitch over the left center field wall for a three run home run, the team’s first of the year.
Cincinnati came right back with a two-out, two-run home run by Justin Riddel to reclaim the lead at 4-3 after its half of the third.
Ohio State junior Michael Stephens, moments after making a diving stab of a low liner to end UC’s third inning, stroked a double to lead off the Buckeyes’ third and he scored on Dan Burkhart’s triple, tying the score at 4-all. The triple was Burkhart’s second of the year.
DeLucia then led off the fourth with another home run, this time a no-doubt line drive to left, giving the Buckeyes a 5-4 lead.
A Cameron Satterwhite home run in the fifth inning tied the score once again, and two singles later the day was done for Wolosianski, who scattered nine hits and gave up five runs in 4.1 innings of work. Rucinski, who pitched so well in relief Friday vs. Notre Dame, came in and stopped the bleeding by striking out two Bearcats to get the Buckeyes out of the inning.
After Rucinski mowed down the Bearcats three-up-three-down in the sixth, the Buckeyes manufactured a run to take a 6-5 lead. Stephens reached on an error and moved to second on a balk. Justin Miller laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to get Stephens to third base, and then Stephens scored on a sacrifice fly by Burkhart.
That would be it for the scoring as Rucinski retired the first seven batters he faced and 11 of 13 before turning the game over to Hale, Ohio State’s most experienced pitcher, with runners on first and third in the eighth inning. Hale got the Buckeyes out of the jam with a groundout, and then he came back to strike out the side in the ninth, including called third strikes on Spina and another UC power hitter, Riddel who homered three times during the “Challenge.”
UC reliever Andrew Burkett shut the Buckeye bats down, retiring all eight batters he faced from the sixth inning on.

Buckeyes Down Thundering Herd, 8-1
Ohio State won the final midweek night game of the season with an 8-1 decision over Marshall Wednesday at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes now turn their attention to a four-game homestand against Illinois this weekend.
The teams managed to play five innings in a steady rain and had to endure a 22-minute delay between the top and bottom of the second inning. After the delay, Ohio State scored four runs. Ryan Dew led off with a double and Brian DeLucia drove him in with a double of his own. A single by Dan Burkhart plated DeLucia. Tyler Engle doubled putting runners at second and third for Tony Kennedy who singled up the middle to score two more.
Marshall scored its lone run in the top of the third, but Ohio State countered with one in the fourth and three in the fifth. The Buckeyes finsihed the game with 10 hits, including two each by DeLucia, Engle and Justin Miller. Cory Rupert drove in two. Miller and Rupert each hit home runs.
The Herd had just three hits against Buckeye pitching. Andrew Armstrong got the start and the win in 4.0 innings. Alex Wimmers pitched 1.0 inning.
After the Big Ten series with Illinois, the Buckeyes close out the home portion of the schedule against Buffalo Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. in the annual Columbus Public Schools Day.

Buckeyes Bombed in Ann Arbor
The way the Buckeyes had played the first three games of the series and with J.B. Shuck on the mound, I don't think anyone could have possibly predicted the shellacking Mighigan put on Ohio State Sunday. The Wolverines flexed their muscles for a 15-1 victory (Box Score) to clinch a 3-1 series victory.
Michigan scored seven in the second inning and sent Shuck to the showers in the fifth, touching him for 11 runs, all earned, on eight hits. The junior from Galion, struck out 11 but walked five in 4.2 innings. Drew Rucinski allowed a run in 1.1 innings. Josh Edgin allowed three runs in 1.0 inning while Jared Strayer was the only Buckeye to escape without a run against in his 1.0 inning.
The Buckeyes didn't score until the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Brian DeLucia that scored Ryan Meade. Michael Arp had two of the Buckeyes' five, yes five, hits. Conversely, Michigan had 14 hits and were unphased by four errors.
I think we're all getting tired of losing to the team up north. With eight Big Ten games remaining the team will be feeling the pressure. The goal at this point is to make the tournament (as one of the top six teams in the league) and defend last year's tournament championship. Michigan seems like a team of destiny this year.

Buckeyes Win Again
Ohio State downed Memphis 1-0 (box score) Saturday to improve to 2-0. Rightfielder Ryan Dew delivered an RBI single to score second baseman Cory Kovanda in the top of the first inning and pitcher J.B. Shuck made it stand. He allowed just two hits and struck out nine in 6.0 innings to get the win. Alex Wimmers allowed one hit in his three innings on the hill, striking out five of the 10 batters he faced.
The Buckeyes out-hit the Tigers 8-3, getting three hits from catcher Justin "Gus" Miller. Ohio State had another two errors Saturday and have five errors in two games. The fielding miscues should settle down and are no doubt the result of not being able to practice outside.
Brian DeLucia delivered another hit in his lone at bat Saturday. After going 4-for-4 Friday vs. Arkansas State, he singled with one out in the second Saturday and is 5-for-5 in the two games. According to the Ohio State game recap, DeLucia strained a hamstring on the play and left the game for pinch-runner Tyler Engle, a true freshman.
The Buckeye Nine close out the Service Academies Spring Classic Sunday vs. Seton Hall. The Scarlet and Gray will be trying to go 3-0 to open a season for the first time since 2002, when they opened 6-0-1. First pitch Sunday is at 11 a.m., ET. I originally listed the game with a 2 p.m. start so please make note of the correct start time.
Saturday in the Big Ten

Ohio State Opens Season With Win
The Buckeyes downed Arkansas State 7-3 (box score) Friday in the season opener for both teams. Ohio State also opened with an 8-6 victory over James Madison to start the 2007 season. The Buckeye Nine has won three of the last four season openers going back to 2005 when the team beat Middle Tennessee. The lone blemish was a 6-2 setback against Wake Forest in 2006.
Friday saw the return of senior Dan DeLucia, who came back from Tommy John surgery in just 10 months. It typically takes a year to come back from the surgery but anyone who knows Dan knows about his intense work ethic. Friday's game marked the third opening-day start for DeLucia, the Buckeyes' only three-time captain. He faced 17 batters in 4.0 innings and finsihed with just two strikeouts, but did not walk a batter while allowing one run on five hits (only one for extra bases).
Dan's brother Brian had a perfect day at the plate in going 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. The third baseman doubled in the second inning and got singles in the forth and seventh innings before homering in his final at bat in the eighth inning. Centerfielder J.B. Shuck finished 3-for-5 and scored twice while freshman DH Ryan Meade added two hits.
In early season fashion, Ohio State had to overcome three errors, but out hit Arkansas State 13-10 in the nine-inning affair. Hopefully the weather will hold the rest of the week. The high Saturday should be 47 and climb to 52 for Sunday under partly cloudy skies.
Coach Bob Todd, who is in his 21st season at the helm of the Buckeyes, watched from the dugout recovering from double knee replacement surgery in late fall. I am sure Bill Wells and Pete Houck were joking about six more weeks of winter if assistant coach Greg Cypret saw his shadow when he stepped out of the dugout and into the third-base coaches box.
