More honors for Burkhart and Wimmers

More accolades for the duo

I do not mean to sound like a broken record, but once again the battery of Dan Burkhart and Alex Wimmers have received honors, awards, and recognition.

The Moeller products who enter the 2010 season as the Big Ten's gold standard, were named pre-season All-Americans by Ping! Baseball.

Burkhart received his second second-team All-America honor, the first by way of the National College Baseball Writers Association. Burkhart, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year was the team's MVP in Coach Todd's eyes in 2009.

The Friday night starter who will be throwing to Burkhart in Wimmers has now received his third pre-season honor. Ping! selected Wimmers to their first-team. That AA honor coincides with second-team selections by NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball.

The College Baseball Blog has selected the 2009 co-Big Ten Pitcher of the Year as their #9 player for the 2010 season.

Not much to report here. Though I can pass along sources within the Ohio State Department of Athletics have told us replacing the field and sod is on the docket of "things to do" for the DoA.

Bill Davis Stadium has received upgrades in the external facade and recognition along the outfield wall for retired numbers. Now finally the playing surface will be address.

2nd Class of 2010 Commit: Texas RHP Clayton Crum

Klein, TX-

Klein High senior Clayton Crum verbally committed to play baseball at Ohio State.

Crum was the No. 2 pitcher on the Bearkats staff last season behind southpaw Matt Purke, who was drafted in the first round in June by the Texas Rangers.

Crum, who was also the starting quarterback for the Klein football team, tore his UCL earlier this summer and had Tommy John reconstructive surgery last month.

He’ll miss the football season and play a limited role for the KHS baseball team next spring, but he’ll report to Columbus, Ohio as a freshman ready to play fall baseball.

Crum is one of the top 2010 Seniors in the state of Texas according to Donald Boyles of The College Baseball Blog and comes in at #20 in his list of the top players.

I'm not going to go into great detail this week. The series with Illinois is pretty important with the Bucks having a chance to really chase down the Big Ten Championship that has eluded us since 2001. So the NCAA stuff is on the back-burner for now. But here's where the Bucks are projected.

Every porjection has 3 Big Ten teams in, OSU and Minnesota as 2-seeds, Illinois as a 3-seed. Turning out to be a great year for the Big Ten.

Out of the four possibilities listed, I'd take the Manhattan Regional to be honest. Yes ESPN has Ohio State hosting, but serioursly, drawing Kyle Gibson game 1? Then still having TCU and Kent State in there? KSU and Wazzu are much weaker teams than Mizzou and TCU. KSU probably wouldn't offer too hostile of a crowd, at least not compared to LSU.

The Bucks RPI is at 33 heading into the weekend.

Wah! Wah!

Quit your crying Andy Lopez and learn to deal with reality. Lopez is the head baseball coach at Arizona who found a sympathetic (and young) ear. Poor Andy is having to learn how to adjust to college baseball's universal start date. Bryan Roy, a student reporter for the Arizona Daily Wildcat, filed a report that Brian Foley was quick to mention on his outstanding blog, The College Baseball Blog. Lopez argues baseball's new schedule hurts academics; uneven competition remains. At least Roy had the sense to interview Rich Maloney at Michigan. Maloney, of course, rubbed it in their face a little bit more.
