With Indiana comes the first Big Ten home opponent for the Buckeyes. The weekend presents you, the Buckeye faithful, with three opportunities to support the men of Scarlet & Gray. Fresh off of a 12-7 midweek victory over Xavier, the weekend provides the student-athlete Buckeyes with a statement to make to the rest of the Big Ten as they defend their conference championship taking on the tournament champ of a year ago.
In our preview we'll have a side-by-side comparison of the two teams, projected rotations, a brief intro of Indiana, a key match-up, available media outlets, and other goodies and nuggets for your reading pleasure that includes a special feature you surely want to read that you can only get here.

More honors for Burkhart and Wimmers
More accolades for the duo
I do not mean to sound like a broken record, but once again the battery of Dan Burkhart and Alex Wimmers have received honors, awards, and recognition.
The Moeller products who enter the 2010 season as the Big Ten's gold standard, were named pre-season All-Americans by Ping! Baseball.
Burkhart received his second second-team All-America honor, the first by way of the National College Baseball Writers Association. Burkhart, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year was the team's MVP in Coach Todd's eyes in 2009.
The Friday night starter who will be throwing to Burkhart in Wimmers has now received his third pre-season honor. Ping! selected Wimmers to their first-team. That AA honor coincides with second-team selections by NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball.
The College Baseball Blog has selected the 2009 co-Big Ten Pitcher of the Year as their #9 player for the 2010 season.

Not much to report here. Though I can pass along sources within the Ohio State Department of Athletics have told us replacing the field and sod is on the docket of "things to do" for the DoA.
Bill Davis Stadium has received upgrades in the external facade and recognition along the outfield wall for retired numbers. Now finally the playing surface will be address.

Bucks 35th in 2009 Attendance

Relating to the schedule, games played, games played in cold weather, etc the NCAA released attendance figures for the 2009 season which you can see here and as you can see the Scarlet & Gray faithful packed Bill Davis Stadium better than any other northern program fanbase.
Unfortunately the feat comes in a way that is unlike Ohio State baseball. For the fifth consecutive season attendance has fell. It is something we have noticed and noted here, the crowds have increasingly become smaller and here is the proof:

Though the picture above taken during the Michigan-Ohio State game shows a crowd of 3,219 on hand, that was far from the norm. Though the large crowd was treated to the no-hitter ironically.
Hopefully with a defending Big Ten champion team taking the field, plus a team with high expecations and of national notice, BDS will be packed to the mid-2000s level.

Columbus to host Big Ten Tourney through '12
Park Ridge, Ill. –- The Big Ten Conference, Huntington Park and the Greater Columbus Sports Commission announced today that Columbus, Ohio, will be home to the Big Ten Baseball Tournament for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons. The Big Ten played its first neutral-site tournament since 1994 at Columbus’ Huntington Park in 2009 and will return to the ballpark in 2011 and 2012. Due to a facility conflict, the 2010 tournament will be held at Ohio State’s Bill Davis Stadium.
“The Big Ten Conference is excited to return to the city of Columbus for its upcoming baseball tournaments,” Big Ten Conference Commissioner James E. Delany said. “Last year’s event provided a fantastic experience for our coaches, student-athletes and fans, and we look forward to growing the event in the next three years.”
“We are thrilled that Columbus, Bill Davis Stadium and Huntington Park will host the Big Ten Baseball Tournament through 2012,” Greater Columbus Sports Commission Executive Director Linda Shetina Logan said. “Our community thanks the Big Ten Conference, its schools and coaches for making this commitment to Columbus, and we will work to build an atmosphere for this tournament similar to the College World Series.”
The 2009 Big Ten Baseball Tournament drew more than 12,000 fans, marking the tournament’s highest total attendance in the past decade. Indiana took home the program’s second tournament title, earning the Big Ten’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
“We were proud to host the Big Ten Baseball Tournament in 2009 and look forward to its return to Huntington Park in 2011 and 2012,” said Columbus Clippers General Manager Ken Schnacke, who also manages Huntington Park. “And we look forward to partnering with the Big Ten and the Columbus Sports Commission to grow the tournament every year.”
Prior to 2009, the Big Ten Baseball Tournament had been played at the site of the regular-season champion or the champion from a pre-selected division since its inception in 1981, with the exception of 1993 and 1994, when the tournament was held in Battle Creek, Mich. From 1981-99, the tournament field consisted of the conference’s top four teams. In 2000, the field expanded to include six squads. The Big Ten Baseball Tournament is a double-elimination event with the top two seeds earning first-round byes.
The Big Ten Conference is an association of 11 world-class universities whose member institutions share a common mission of research, graduate, professional and undergraduate teaching and public service. Founded in 1896, the Big Ten has sustained a comprehensive set of shared practices and policies that enforce the priority of academics in student-athletes’ lives and emphasize the values of integrity, fairness and competitiveness. Bowling Green makes its way into Columbus for its fourth straight road game. Bowling Green battled Kent State over the weekend, losing a three-game series, 2-1. BGSU won the opener, 9-2, but Kent State came back to win the Saturday double-header, 12-9 and 9-4. The Falcons are batting an impressive .326 as a team and are being led by Tyler Elkins (.400) and Ryan Shay (.387). The staff ERA is 6.96. Leaders on the mound are RH Brennan Smith (6-3; 2.50) and Matt Malewitz (2-1; 3.88).
AN EYE ON BALL STATE
Ball State is coming off a 2-1 series loss at home to Central Michigan. The Cardinals are now 16-17 overall and are in second scond place in the MAC West with a 6-7 mark. Ball State brings speed to the table, leading the MAC in stolen bases with 84 in 98 attempts. Kolbrin Vitek is hitting .376 with seven HRs and 37 RBI and he is also 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA on the mound. Jeremy Hazelbaker leads with a .440 average. Brad Piatt is 4-1 with a 3.95 ERA.

No. 26 Ohio State hosts No. 24 Kent State
As big a mid-week game as we’ll have at Bill Davis Stadium this year takes place at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday as the 26-7 Ohio State Buckeyes host 24-7 Kent State University, a team predicted to win the MAC and make the NCAA tournament.

Assistant coach Greg Cypret, who played at Missouri while Todd was on the Tigers’ staff, spent three years as an assistant at Kent State before coming to Ohio State with Todd in the fall of 1988.

Ohio State and Kent State are playing for the 48th time in a series that started in 1958. Ohio State leads the all-time series, 34-13. In their last meeting, the Buckeyes came out on top with a 5-3 win in 2004 at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
