Buckeye Baseball News and Notes 7/23

It's been a few days since we've caught up on what has gone on in the world of Buckeye baseball. As we'll starting to enter into the dog days of Summer the news might not be as frequent, but I'll do my best to keep up on things.

Today we take a look at perhaps the finest outing this summer by a Buckeye pitcher, a former pitcher who continued an impressive summer, and a future Buckeye who like his Buckeye baseball brethren is dazzling on the diamond.

Luebke Deals in Showdown of Former Buckeyes

As mentioned on Tuesday, there was a game at the AAA level which feature two former Buckeye standouts. Doug Deeds (00-02) and his Reno Aces welcomed Cory Luebke (05-07) and his Portland Beavers for four games starting Monday. On Tuesday it was the 2007 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year's turn in the rotation, and the former Buckeye ace put on a show that cements his spot as the Beavers' ace and one of San Diego's top prospects.

In the 2-1 Beavers win the former All-American shined as the Beavers ace. Over seven innings Luebke just three hits while yielding one run. As Luebke retired the final 15 batters he faced, the southpaw struck out five without issuing a walk. About the lone run that scored on Luebke's watch? It came from Deeds after a double in the first inning. Deeds finished the game 1-for-3 with the double and run.

Current Players
Wolosiansky Stops for Ironmen

Tuesday proved to be a great night for Buckeye pitchers as current Buckeye Dean Wolosiansky matched Luebke in delivering a stout performance. In the Miners 6-2 win over Lorain County, back home in his Buckeye State, Wolosiansky pitched eight innings in recording his fourth win over the summer against just one loss.

In arguably his finest outing this summer, the righty struck out eight over the eight innings while walking just one batter, surrendering three hits and one run. For the summer Wolosiansky now has an ERA of 1.36 in seven games with 43 strikeouts and 19 walks.

Hayes Leading the Ways for one of Indiana's Best

Incoming freshman Jacob Hayes of Terre Haute, Indiana, is making it quite hard to automatically put him as a backup in the middle infield. As his summer team Wayne Newton rides a 14-game winning streak into regional Hayes is right there leading the way offensively.

So far this summer Hayes in batting .467 with a team-high 54 runs scored and 10 triples. If a glimpse of that hitting ability and speed is shown during fall practices, you can bet Beals will find a way to utilize Hayes. The Post 346 team has been a longtime power in Indiana Legion baseball which he can hope is a strong sign of Hayes ability to perform at a high level.

Burkhart Officially Gone

I should apologize for not actively keeping up to date on this, but the 2009 Big Ten Player of the Year has indeed signed a professional contract with the San Francisco Giants who select the backstop in the 10th round of June's MLB draft. In a twitter reply to me, Baseball America's Jim Callis said the following: Burkhart already signed with SF for $90,000. Wouldn't have gotten more in '11. Baseball America has a complete list of who has and has not signed of those in the top 10 rounds.

Thanks I missed that. Was looking through the Wranglers stats to see if he started last night, didn't check any boxscores.

Wow, 4 innings on the 21st after 6 on the 18th. As always he is the ultimate team player.
