Baseball Opens 2009 Practice Monday

Head coach Bob Todd and members of the Ohio State baseball team will have their first practice of the season Monday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. The first hour will be an entire team workout at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center (WHAC) with the second hour a divided workout between the WHAC and the baseball hitting cages beneath the baseball offices at Bill Davis Stadium.

Todd, who joined former Ohio State coaches L.W. St. John and Marty Karow in the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame with his induction earlier this month, is in his 22nd year as Ohio State coach. He is just 45 wins away from 1,000 career wins and enters the season with a career mark of 955-517-2 and an Ohio State record of 831-435-2. He has led the Buckeyes to six Big Ten Conference championships, eight Big Ten tournament titles and to 12 NCAA tournament berths.

The Buckeyes open their season Feb. 20-22 in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the inaugural BIG EAST-Big Ten Baseball Challenge. Ohio State will take on Notre Dame, Connecticut and Cincinnati in its three “challenge” games.

Senior Justin Miller Named 2009 Sole Captain

I do need to apologize, there have been a few rumblings and newsworthy events coming out of the baseball program of late, it just took me a few weeks to get back into the flow of class and work and making a committed effort to keep everyone informed. Without further delay, there are quite a few things to pass along.

Starting off, Senior Justin "Gus" Miller, has been selected by his peers to be the team's sole captain for the 2009 season. Gus was a captain during the 2008 season, co-captaining the team with Senior Dan DeLucia. In retaining his captaincy Miller becomes Ohio State's 14th two-time captain. He is the first sole captain of the team since Greg Policka was the team’s only captain in 1986, two years before Todd’s arrival.

Justin is respected by his teammates and they are the ones who choose their captain,” 22nd-year Ohio State head coach Bob Todd said. “He comes to practice intent on getting better every day and it shows in the way he plays. He is responsible in the classroom and off the field as well.”

Miller, who is on the pre-season watch list for the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award, presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame, is the team’s best returning hitter with a .348 career average that skyrockets to .387 in Big Ten Conference games. Last year he led the Buckeyes in eight hitting categories, including average (.395), slugging (.535), home runs (4) and RBI (61).

Miller has also led the team in hits the past two years, the first Buckeye to do so since Jonathan Sweet in 1993-94 and only the seventh Buckeye ever to accomplish the feat. He enters the season with 197 career hits and 124 career RBI. He will crack Ohio State’s Top 25 for career hits and career RBI with three more of each, respectively.
