Regional Roundup

I'm not going to go into great detail this week. The series with Illinois is pretty important with the Bucks having a chance to really chase down the Big Ten Championship that has eluded us since 2001. So the NCAA stuff is on the back-burner for now. But here's where the Bucks are projected.

SEBaseball.com

Austin Regional
#1 Texas
#4 Binghamton
#2 Ohio State
#3 Texas State

The College Baseball Blog

Baton Rouge Regional
#1 LSU
#4 Miss. Valley State
#2 Ohio State
#3 Kansas

ESPN

Columbus Regional
#1 TCU
#4 Kent State
#2 Ohio State
#3 Missouri

Yahoo Sports/Rivals

Manhattan Regional
#1 Kansas State
#3 Washington State
#2 Ohio State
#4 Kent State

Every porjection has 3 Big Ten teams in, OSU and Minnesota as 2-seeds, Illinois as a 3-seed. Turning out to be a great year for the Big Ten.

Out of the four possibilities listed, I'd take the Manhattan Regional to be honest. Yes ESPN has Ohio State hosting, but serioursly, drawing Kyle Gibson game 1? Then still having TCU and Kent State in there? KSU and Wazzu are much weaker teams than Mizzou and TCU. KSU probably wouldn't offer too hostile of a crowd, at least not compared to LSU.

The Bucks RPI is at 33 heading into the weekend.

Regional Projections: Week Three

The Buckeyes come into this weekend's series with Michigan State at 23-7 overall. The Bucks have saw their winning clip take a slight bump, splitting its last 6 games overall, highlighted by going 1-2 last weekend against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Though many might be quick to jump of the wagon with a slight hiccup, and with playing 27 of your first 29 away on the road, hiccups will happen, the Buckeyes are still in great position for postseason play either via an at-large bid or through the Big Ten auto-bid.

According to Boyd's World, the Bucks RPI currently sits at 23, which is right on par with the last 2 weeks, though dropping some from the mid-teens, 23 is very respectable and attractive when the chance to host a regional is in play. Minnesota currently sits at 21, and taking only 1 of 3 against a team that high obviously did not hurt the Bucks in the computers. Though it did in the human polls.

Hosting a regional, is more than in play for the Bucks, as SEBaseball.com has Ohio State has a #2 seed in the Columbus Regional, that has Hawaii as the #1 seed, Alabama as the #3 seed, and Kent State as the #4 seed. Interesting that SEBaseball projects OSU to receive an at-large bid, as part of three Big Ten teams advancing to the NCAA tournament. The Bucks are predicted to join Minnesota as an at-large, while Illinois is expected to receive the auto-bid.

SEBaseball Regional Projections

Rivals/Yahoo College Baseball has Ohio State not hosting a regional, but still easily in the tournament as a #2 seed in the Norman Regional. Host Oklahoma is the #1 seed, Florida is the #3 seed, and Oral Roberts rounds out the group as the #4 seed.

Rivals feels the same as SEBaseball when it comes to the Big Ten's NCAA chances, as Minnesota receives an at-large bid, and Illinois again is seen as the eventually auto-bid recipient.

NCAA/Regional Projections

Your weekly update on where the Buckeye's NCAA Tournament hopes stand.

This week there are three projections I've found, all have the Bucks as a #1 seed and hosting a Regional. Ohio State currently sits with a Psuedo-RPI of 22 according to Boyd's World. The Bucks enter a very important three game weekend series against the Minnesota Golden Gophers who have an RPI of 37. If the Bucks can manage a series victory they will solidify their spot as regional hosts.

SEBaseball Regional Projections: Ohio State Hosting & #1 Seed

Yes there is still two months left before the committee selects participants to the 2009 NCAA Baseball Tournament, but its always good when you see things like this, regardless of the stage in the season.

Mark Etheridge who does a great job covering baseball in the southeastern portion of the country will do weekly NCAA field projections, with who would make the field of 64 if the season ended today, regional host and sites, and national seeds.

As of now Etheridge sees Ohio State hosting a Regional and being the #1 seed in the Regional. Also in the Columbus Regional would be Kentucky as the #2 seed from the SEC via at-large birth, Kent State as the #3 via an auto bid from the MAC, and Xavier as the #4 as the auto bid from the A-10.

Ohio State is currently being viewed favorably off the strength of its 18-3 record which has produced an RPI of 16 according to Boyd's World. The Bucks have a chance to solidify its RPI and national rankings with a successful two weeks as Penn State has an RPI of 113, non-conference Xavier 57, and next weekend Big Ten opponent Minnesota sits at 20.

Ohio State has not hosted a Regional since 2003, and if the Bucks take care of the chances in front of them, the schedule is shaping out to end the drought.
